What is a Celebes Rainbowfish?

The Celebes Rainbowfish (Marosatherina ladigesi) is a slender, active schooling fish endemic to clear, alkaline hill streams around Maros, Sulawesi (formerly Celebes), Indonesia. Reaching about 7 cm (2.8 in), it is small for a rainbowfish — but males develop dramatically elongated dorsal and anal fin rays that flare open like a sail during courtship, earning the fish its alias “Celebes Sailfish.” Blue-green iridescence over silver flanks and yellow fin tips make a well-lit school genuinely eye-catching.

Placed in the family Melanotaeniidae, Marosatherina ladigesi is the only species in its genus. Care is rated medium primarily because of water-chemistry requirements: this fish needs moderately hard, alkaline water rather than the soft, acidic conditions many popular community species prefer. Match those parameters and you have a peaceful, elegant species worth the extra effort.

Where do Celebes Rainbowfish come from in the wild?

Marosatherina ladigesi is narrowly endemic to the Maros river system and surrounding clear-water streams in the south-western peninsula of Sulawesi, Indonesia. These streams drain limestone karst terrain, producing the characteristic alkalinity and moderate hardness the species requires. Flow is gentle to moderate, substrate is typically sand or fine gravel, and riparian vegetation provides shade along with insects and invertebrates that fall to the surface.

The species is considered vulnerable in the wild due to habitat degradation and historical over-collection. Most fish available today are captive-bred, which benefits conservation and means they are well-adapted to aquarium life — though their chemistry preferences remain anchored to their Sulawesi origin.

What tank size and setup do Celebes Rainbowfish need?

A minimum of 75 litres (20 gallons) in a long-footprint tank is essential — these are energetic open-water schoolers that use the full horizontal length of the aquarium. A 90 cm (36 in) long tank lets males display properly without constant glass contact.

Plant sides and back with vallisneria, hornwort, or java fern (all handle alkaline water well), leaving a clear central swimming lane. A dark substrate and a patch of floating plants reduce reflections and improve the fish’s iridescence. Fit a secure lid — Celebes Rainbowfish jump when startled. Filtration should provide moderate turnover without strong jets; a sponge filter or spray-bar output keeps flow gentle.

What water parameters do Celebes Rainbowfish need?

  • Temperature: 22–28 °C (72–82 °F). The lower half of this range (22–25 °C / 72–77 °F) reflects the cooler highland stream origin and is perfectly acceptable; these fish do not need the higher temperatures typical of many tropical species.
  • pH: 7.0–8.5. Neutral to alkaline is essential — do not keep this species in soft, acidic conditions.
  • Hardness: 10–20 dGH. Moderately hard water mirrors the limestone-influenced streams of Sulawesi.

Stability is as important as hitting exact numbers. Cycle the tank fully before adding fish, perform weekly water changes of 25–30 %, and avoid sudden chemistry swings. In areas with naturally soft tap water, crushed coral or aragonite substrate, or a small amount of coral rubble in the filter, will buffer pH and hardness into range without chasing chemicals manually.

What do Celebes Rainbowfish eat?

Celebes Rainbowfish are omnivores that feed primarily in the middle of the water column. In the wild they take insects, invertebrates, and plant material; in the aquarium they accept a variety of prepared and live foods readily.

A base of quality micro-pellets or fine-grade tropical flake suits daily feeding. Supplement two or three times a week with small live or frozen foods — daphnia, baby brine shrimp, micro worms, and finely chopped bloodworm — which brighten colour noticeably, especially in displaying males. Particle size matters: mouths are small, so oversized pellets get ignored. Feed small amounts once or twice a day and remove uneaten food promptly.

Are Celebes Rainbowfish peaceful, and what are good tank mates?

Celebes Rainbowfish are genuinely peaceful and cause no trouble with similarly sized, non-aggressive species. The one consideration is water chemistry: they need alkaline, moderately hard water that rules out soft-water species like most South American tetras, discus, and rams.

Good tank-mate categories include other Sulawesi endemics (for a biotope setup), livebearers such as mollies and platies that also prefer alkaline water, larger peaceful danios, and calm loaches or Corydoras that tolerate neutral-to-alkaline conditions. Avoid fin-nippers — the males’ elongated rays are tempting targets for tiger barbs or serpae tetras. Larger Neocaridina shrimp in a heavily planted tank are lower-risk than young cherry shrimp, which active rainbowfish may pick off.

Keep a school of at least six; smaller numbers cause chronic stress, faded colour, and timid behaviour.

How do you tell male and female Celebes Rainbowfish apart?

Sexual dimorphism is pronounced and easy to read in adults. Males develop greatly elongated rays on both the dorsal and anal fins that fan open during courtship, producing the sail-fin silhouette the common name describes. Colouration is more vivid — stronger blue-green iridescence and more saturated yellow fin tips. Displaying males arch their bodies, raise their sails, and circle rivals or females.

Females are plainer: dorsal and anal fins are shorter and rounded, body colour is more muted silver-green, and the body is slightly stockier, especially when gravid. The difference is visible from across the room in a mixed, well-lit group.

How do Celebes Rainbowfish breed?

Breeding is achievable in the home aquarium and rates medium difficulty. Conditioning with varied live and frozen foods encourages spawning. Males display intensively — raising their sails and circling females — in one of the hobby’s better courtship shows.

Eggs are scattered singly among fine-leaved plants or a spawning mop and abandoned by the parents. A 40–60 litre dedicated tank with java moss, gentle sponge filtration, and matching water chemistry works best. Introduce one or two conditioned pairs, allow spawning over several days, then remove the adults. Eggs hatch in roughly 7–10 days at 24–26 °C (75–79 °F). Fry are tiny; start them on infusoria or commercial fry food for the first week before moving to baby brine shrimp nauplii.

What diseases commonly affect Celebes Rainbowfish?

Celebes Rainbowfish are reasonably hardy in appropriate chemistry but susceptible to common ailments when water quality lapses.

  • Ich (white spot): White granules on fins and body — typically triggered by chilling or poor water conditions. More frequent water changes and raising temperature to 27–28 °C (81–82 °F) is the first response.
  • Fin rot: Ragged or receding fin edges, especially on males’ elongated rays. Almost always a water-quality problem — improve maintenance before anything else.
  • Velvet (Oodinium): A fine gold or rust-coloured dust on the body; fish scratch against decor. Dimming lights limits the parasite’s photosynthetic energy while treatment is prepared.
  • Internal parasites: Hollow belly and wasting in otherwise active fish, more common in wild-caught stock.

Prevention: consistent water changes, avoiding temperature swings, quarantining all new arrivals for two to four weeks, and not overfeeding.

Health note: Medication dosing and specific disease diagnosis are beyond the scope of a care profile. For visibly sick fish, confirm symptoms against a reputable veterinary or fish-health source before reaching for any treatment.

How long do Celebes Rainbowfish live?

A well-kept Celebes Rainbowfish lives 2–4 years. This is shorter than many community fish, so gradual school turnover is normal — adding young fish periodically keeps the group vibrant. Correct water chemistry, a varied diet, and consistent maintenance are the key variables; fish kept in soft or acidic conditions rarely reach their potential and show faded colour well before the end. Captive-bred stock starts better-adapted to aquarium life and is the preferred choice.

Frequently asked questions

What water hardness do Celebes Rainbowfish need?

They come from the alkaline, moderately hard streams of Sulawesi, so they thrive at pH 7.0–8.5 and 10–20 dGH. Soft, acidic water stresses them and dulls their colour — they are a poor match for soft-water tetras and discus tanks.

Can Celebes Rainbowfish be kept in a nano aquarium?

Not really — although they reach only 7 cm, they are active, open-water schoolers that need a group of at least six. A 75-litre (20-gallon) long tank is the practical minimum to give the school adequate swimming space.

What you need to keep a celebes rainbowfish

The baseline is a heated, filtered 75 L+ tank: a reliable heater to hold 22–28 °C (72–82 °F), a gentle filter that won't batter a celebes rainbowfish in the current, and a tight-fitting lid. Cycle the tank fully before adding any fish.
