Best Algae-Eating Fish & Invertebrates
Cleanup-crew species that graze algae, biofilm and leftover food.
How to choose an algae eater
No algae eater is a substitute for the real fixes — less light, fewer nutrients and more plants — but the right cleanup crew keeps surfaces grazed and tidies up uneaten food. Match the grazer to the tank: shrimp and snails for nano setups, a bristlenose pleco for something larger.
Avoid the common pleco unless you have a very big tank; it reaches 45 cm and outgrows almost everything. And remember most "algae eaters" still need feeding — supplement with algae wafers and blanched vegetables so they do not go hungry.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best algae eater for a small tank?
Invertebrates — amano shrimp, cherry shrimp and nerite snails — are the best nano cleanup crew. Nerite snails in particular graze hard algae without breeding into a plague in freshwater.
Will algae eaters keep my tank completely clean?
No. They graze surfaces and leftovers but cannot fix the cause of an algae bloom. Reduce lighting, cut feeding and add fast-growing plants — then let the cleanup crew maintain the result.
