Best Nano Reef Fish for Small Saltwater Tanks

Small marine species that suit a 40–115 litre nano reef without outgrowing it.

How to choose a nano reef fish

Nano reef fish stay small and content in a tight footprint: a single clownfish, a pair of gobies, a firefish and a royal gramma can make a 60–115 litre reef feel fully stocked. Pick fish that occupy different zones — a goby on the sand, a clownfish in open water, a firefish hovering at a rock face — so the tank looks busy without anyone crowding anyone else.

Small saltwater volumes swing fast, so discipline matters more than in a big reef: stock light, keep one fish per niche, and do not add a fish that "only gets a bit big". Tangs in particular need open swimming room and do not belong in a nano, however small the juvenile looks in the shop.

Frequently asked questions

What fish can live in a 10-gallon (38 L) nano reef?

Realistically one or two very small fish — a single clown goby or neon goby, or one ocellaris clownfish — plus a clean-up crew. Most "nano" fish are happier with at least 60–75 litres, so stock a true 38-litre tank very sparingly.

Can you keep a tang in a nano reef?

No. Even the smallest tangs need a lot of open swimming space and a tank of 280 litres or more. In a nano they become stressed and prone to disease. Stick to gobies, small clownfish, firefish and a royal gramma instead.
